Mother’s Day

Last night it rained hard – one of those instant powerful spring downpours, soaking the ground and surrounding lands with its nourishing wet. When I fed the horses their breakfast, the bushes were still dripping and the air saturated with thick flavours of musky earth, wet horse bodies, and tart forest flower aroma.
As I moved quietly among the munching herd, scooping last nights manure off the pasture, a deep stillness caught me by surprise. As I listened to the earth absorbing the water deeply into its cells, my own body seemed to simultaneously dissolve into the ground – joining the song of the earth like a satisfied toddler who smacks her lips, sighing contently with the knowledge of safety in her true mother’s embrace.
